The Golden Retriever
Overview
It is often said that if you treat a dog with love and kindness then he or she will be a friend for life. This is certainly true when it is applied to the beautiful Golden Retriever.
The Golden Retriever comes highly recommended by breeders as a dog that suits family life. He will play with the children, accompany the man of the house on long walks in the country and is even tempered enough to join the female of the house on a shopping trip. An accolade that most women would find difficult to bestow on her partner. As the breed name suggests, they are excellent retrievers and often used as working dogs. It is not surprising then, that they are chosen as guide dogs, or seeing dogs for the blind.
Most enthusiasts argue that Golden Retrievers were developed from Russian shepherd dogs discovered by Lord Tweedmouth. Others would have it that they began from a litter of retriever/spaniels. However they began, they are an extremely popular breed, both as a working dog that is reliable and intelligent and also as a gentle and trustworthy animal that makes a wonderful family pet and trusted helper to those who require a patient friend.
The golden or cream coat of the Retriever is instantly recognisable as is the sturdy bodied stance on short legs and the generously proportioned head. They have very appealing, sometimes comical facial features, including a wide 'smile'.
It would be very difficult not to fall in love with those beautiful brown eyes.
